ProSeminar’s one-day Business Writing Skills Workshop provides an excellent opportunity for participants to hone their skills, take stock of their current approaches and pick up a range of useful techniques.

Focusing on reports, letters, e-mails and other common forms of written communication, this business writing skills workshop emphasises not only how to write clearly, concisely and correctly, but also how to chose words, style and tone to impact positively on relationships and achieve business objectives.

Course Outline

  • Introduction to business writing skills

  • Planning the process and getting started

    o    the six steps to writing

    o    defining aims and thinking about readers’ needs

    o    getting started quickly and painlessly

     

  • Structuring reports, letters and e-mails

    o    structuring ideas and classifying information

    o    logical sequencing

    o    using paragraphs to reflect the structure

    o    choosing good headings and subject lines

     

  • Writing clearly and concisely

    o    using the right words - simple, necessary, specific and active

    o    understanding readability statistics

    o    keeping sentences short but fluent

    o    using bullet points and checking parallelism

  • Tone and style

    o    adopting a tone and style in line with objectives and readers’ expectations

    o    e-mail etiquette

    o    using positive language and focusing on solutions

    o    responding to  complaints and writing ‘bad news’ letters and e-mails

     

     
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling

  • Layout

    o    creating ‘white’ space – margins, spacing etc

    o    layout devices to support structure - consistency in headings and sub-headings

    o    choosing fonts and text alignment

    o    using charts and tables

    o    layout devices for writing procedures and instructions

     

  • Proofreading and spellchecking

  • Getting the best from MS Word – using advanced features

Course Methods 

ProSeminar’s Business Writing Skills Workshop is based around an informal and interactive format. Participants are asked to bring samples of their documents to work on throughout the day. This allows them to relate the principles discussed to their own writing and identify specific ways of enhancing its effectiveness for the future.
